MBBS Medicine (A100)
How this university scores applications, with the figures it publishes.
High level summary
Simple summary. Excruciating detail below.
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Is there a score to clear? | No. Applicants are put in order by UCAT score and the university works down the list until the interview places run out. The line moves with the field each year. Any contextual adjustment is below. |
| How to read the UCAT figures here | An average is published but no lowest score. You can see the middle of the successful range, not the bottom of it. |
| What else counts | GCSEs are a gate. Meeting the minimum is what counts; beating it earns nothing. The personal statement is not used to shortlist. The SJT band does not affect shortlisting. |
| Note | Shortlisting is the UCAT alone. Applicants are placed in order rather than measured against a fixed bar. No scoring matrix, no GCSE points, no contextual adjustment. |
Summary of the selection model
| Item | Detail |
|---|---|
| Scoring approach | UCAT used in selection with no published threshold. Personal statements must be relevant to the course but are not scored |
| UCAT - how it is used | Ranked, not thresholded, and shortlisting is 100 PER CENT UCAT. UEA confirmed under FOI_26-182, response of 21 September 2026, with Appendix A that there is no scoring matrix, that GCSE grades are not converted into points, and that no other component carries any weight at shortlisting. The UCAT is used again alongside the interview score when offers are made. |
| UCAT threshold | No threshold at all. UEA confirmed under FOI_26-182, response of 21 September 2026, with Appendix A that applicants are RANKED rather than filtered by a cut-off, and that shortlisting is 100 per cent UCAT with no other component. The effective bar is therefore wherever the interview places run out, and it moves every cycle. |
| UCAT lowest accepted | Not published as a lowest score. UEA supplies quartiles instead, so a quarter of the people below the lower quartile are not visible. 2026 entry, home, of 2700: lower quartile 1890 at interview and 1950 at offer. 2025 entry, home, of 3600: lower quartile 2600 at interview and 2620 at offer, which is about 1930 and 1940 on the current scale. Earlier disclosure log figures, of 3600: lowest UK applicant interviewed 2340 for 2022-23 entry and 2190 for 2023-24. |
| UCAT average accepted | 2026 entry, of 2700, from FOI_26-182, response of 21 September 2026, with Appendix A. AT INTERVIEW: home mean 2011, median 1980, quartiles 1890 and 2110; international mean 2016, median 2010, quartiles 1930 and 2090. AT OFFER: home mean 2070, median 2060, quartiles 1950 and 2170; international mean 2036, median 2030, quartiles 1955 and 2105. 2025 entry, of 3600. AT INTERVIEW: home mean 2743, median 2720, quartiles 2600 and 2850; international mean 2696. AT OFFER: home mean 2756, median 2730, quartiles 2620 and 2860; international mean 2795. |
| Interview format | MMI |
| Contextual offer | None on A100. UEA confirmed under FOI_26-182, response of 21 September 2026, with Appendix A that no reduction in UCAT threshold, academic offer or GCSE requirement is applied to contextual applicants, and that it holds no data broken down by standard or contextual route. A separate Medicine with a Gateway Year programme exists as its own course. |
| Resits | A level resits considered if ABB/AAC achieved at first sitting, and resit applicants must then achieve at least one A* in the resat subject(s) |
| Data status | Complete for both cycles on volumes, means, quartiles and SJT band counts, for home and international separately. UEA holds no standard or contextual split and publishes no lowest score, only quartiles. The scale was not stated despite the request asking for it; the figures themselves identify which cycle is on which scale. |

What this means for an applicant
| The bar is the queue, not a number | With shortlisting at 100 per cent UCAT and no threshold, a score is only ever good enough relative to everyone else who applied that year. UEA publishes no lowest score, so the lower quartile is the closest thing to a floor: for 2026 entry a quarter of those interviewed were below 1890. |
| GCSEs and A levels do not shortlist you | They are an eligibility gate only. Once you meet them they add nothing, and a stronger academic record cannot make up for a lower UCAT here. |
| The SJT will not block you | Band 4 applicants were interviewed in both cycles and six of them were offered places for 2025 entry. |
| Home applicants have a very different experience from international ones | For 2026 entry 84 per cent of home applicants were interviewed against 29 per cent of international applicants. |
| There is no contextual route on A100 | UEA confirmed it applies no contextual reduction of any kind. The Gateway Year is a separate course with its own application. |
